Why a Maize Mill Matters:

SUSTAINABILITY • NUTRITION • EDUCATION

A Maize Mill based in Lira, Uganda

A Maize Mill based in Lira, Uganda

Maize is the single most important cereal crop in northern Uganda and provides more than 40% of the food consumed by students, teachers and the community of 21,000 residents. Milled maize is a staple in the Ugandan diet as maize flour is used to make “Posho”, an inexpensive carbohydrate paired most commonly with beans, served widely across the country and daily at schools for lunch.

This project will improve not only reduce food waste and transportation cost, improve access to high quality milled maize for schools and families, but will also help generate income for Global Leaders Primary School as part of our long-term sustainability plan.
